Bruce Jenner is known to many people as an Olympic hero. In the 1976 Olympic Games, Jenner broke the world record for points when he won the decathlon. In a gesture that has since been emulated by many athletes, a bystander handed him an American flag and he held it high as he ran his victory lap, cementing his place in the hearts of many viewers.

In the thirty plus years since the Olympics, Jenner has become a spokesman for Wheaties cereal and appeared on many television shows, most notably Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which he stars in with his wife and children. What has come to light recently has been Jenner’s past plastic surgery mishaps and his recent procedure to correct failed facelift operations.

Over twenty five years ago, Jenner went against the advice of doctors and had a facelift and rhinoplasty. The result was far from what he had expected. While Jenner was certainly not disfigured or horribly scarred, his appearance changed rather dramatically, sparking a flurry of rumours over the years, ranging from horrific surgery tales to the rumour that he was burned while fleeing a burning house with his family. The truth is far less dramatic.

There are two kinds of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, found in umbilical cord blood, and adult stem cells, from sources such as fat and bone marrow. Both types are pluripotent, and both can potentially be used in medical therapy, including plastic and cosmetic surgery.

Here’s the theoretical application: When stem cells are injected into the patient’s skin, they potentially can turn into fat, bone, muscle, skin or other types of tissue – which can potentially regenerate older tissues into younger healthier tissues, restoring the appearance of youth.

Some scientists say that embryonic fetal tissue from elective abortions provides the best regenerative stem cells for anti-aging injections. However, pro-life organizations and others vehemently object to the use of embryonic stem cells, since the human embryo is killed during the stem cell harvesting process.

Fortunately, not all pluripotent stem cells come from unborn children. During liposuction, the unwanted fatty tissue that is sucked away contains a certain number of special cells, called pre-fat cells.

Researchers have recently discovered that these pre-fat cells are actually stem cells, and can be tricked into becoming bone, connective tissue, nerve cells, and even muscle…. But these potential applications are not currently reality.

There are a number of different surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments that you may be considering if you’d like to improve or enhance your appearance. By no means a complete, what follows below will provide you with a general overview of some treatment options to consider.

Facial Plastic Surgery

There are various facial plastic surgery options that can enhance the way you look. One of the most popular is the facelift, which can eliminate the appearance of facial lines and sagging skin. A rhinoplasty (nose job) is also quite effective at adjusting the size and shape of the nose, which is one of the most noticeable and prominent facial features. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is also quite popular and can address issues you may have with wrinkles and lines around the eyes.

Breast Enhancement Surgery

There are a number of ways that your cosmetic surgeon can both enhance and improve the appearance of a woman’s breasts. Breast augmentation surgery with breast implants is one of the most popular of such surgeries and it is performed to increase breast size and alter the shape of the breasts. Other popular breast surgeries include breast reduction surgery which decreases the size of breasts that are too large, breast lift surgery which makes the breast perkier and less droopy, and breast reconstruction surgery which restores the breast mound following a mastectomy.

Body Contouring Surgery

If you have issues with your body contour, there are several surgeries that can address such problems. The two most popular body contouring options are liposuction which can remove those stubborn pockets of fat that neither diet nor exercise can eliminate and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) which nixes the hanging and lose skin and tissue that accumulates around the abdomen.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

If you are not a good candidate for surgical treatments, there are several non-surgical treatments to consider. BOTOX injections can reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, as can Restylane injections. Sclerotherapy can be performed to reduce the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins, which is another particularly important non-surgical treatment.

The key to a natural and effective outcome is directly dependent on the vector the surgeon uses to elevate the deep tissues. Once the deep structures are restored to the more youthful configuration, the skin should simply redrape over the enhanced contour.

The skin should not be pulled or tightened. These are the most important factors in preventing the “operated” look or the “wind tunnel” appearance that so many patients fear.

This is the perfect procedure for individuals in their 40′s and 50′s with active lifestyles, or older patients who want to minimize downtime yet still get excellent results. The recovery is often about 1 week. Even though, a full facelift can sometimes result in more dramatic outcomes, especially in the neck, taking everything into consideration, many of our patients feel that this is the perfect balance. The results are extremely natural and the healing is very predictable.

There are many different definitions of a Mini Facelift or Mini Lift. In general, it is less invasive than a full face and necklift and requires less downtime to recover. The reason why so many patients choose the mini facelift is that it creates excellent results with minimal downtime and cost. It addresses the jowls, jawline, lower cheeks, and neck.

The procedure can be effectively used to rejuvenate the lower face in all age ranges. Adding to its popularity is the fact that, it has a short recovery period, low risk, lower cost, long lasting, and can easily be done under local anesthesia. There are a lot of different types of minilifts being performed.

Some procedures involve simply removing a small amount of skin. However, to create lasting and meaningful results, the deep muscles (SMAS) of the face and neck need to be addressed. In this case, through very small incisions, the muscle layer of the face and neck are repositioned to a more youthful position. The effects on the neck are very dramatic. In many cases it is equivalent to a neck lift with out the prolonged recovery.

When Rebecca Motondo heard her mother cry on the other end of the phone, her heart broke. Diana Holbrook recently had cataract surgery, eliminating her need to wear glasses. While most people are thrilled to kiss their eyewear goodbye, Holbrook used hers as a shield.

“I asked her why she was crying,” Motondo said. “And she said it was because she always hid behind her glasses; that people think she’s ugly.”

Her mother’s revelation affected Motondo enough to do something about it, and unbeknownst to her mom, she wrote a letter to Dr. Douglas Halliday, a facial plastic surgeon based in East Syracuse. She described her mother’s situation, her selfless nature, and made a very special Mother’s Day request.

“My wish for her would be to have a nose job and a face lift,” the letter read. “I love my mother so much and it breaks my heart to see her hurting. She is the best mother and I would love her to feel good about the way she looks.”

Shortly after Motondo mailed the letter, she went on vacation and returned to find several messages from Halliday’s office, on her answering machine. The doctor wanted to meet with them.

“I felt compelled to do something for this person, who sounded very deserving, and because of her situation, could not afford to do something for herself,” Halliday said. “I also felt this was a very good person and the procedures we were going to do on her would affect her life in a very positive way.”

When Motondo told her mom what she did, Holbrook was hesitant, but eventually came around to the idea.
“When she told me about it, I wanted to do it really bad; I didn’t want to miss the opportunity,” Holbrook said. “I almost said forget it, but I didn’t want to go through life saying ‘I should of.’”

Holbrook also credited her decision to the love and support of her husband Richard.

“He’s very excited for her because he really knows how much she has sacrificed for this family,” Motondo said. “There’s not a lot she does for herself.”

As well, Motondo, having undergone plastic surgery herself, remained encouraging.

“I tried to be very supportive, and to let her know what this would do for her self-esteem.”

To someone who has never considered cosmetic surgery or other appearance-altering medical treatments, they might seem like luxuries, especially in a flat economy. However, both practitioners — surgeons, dentists, eye specialists, and others — and their patients say that body image is often critical not only for self-esteem and confidence, but for career and social advancement. Fortunately, the industry trend is toward quicker, less-costly, and less-invasive procedures, meaning there’s now a treatment option for just about everyone.

To hear Dr. Lisa Emirzian tell it, there’s nothing frivolous about flashing a perfect set of teeth.

“I like to dispel the notion that cosmetic treatment is simply an extravagance,” said Emirzian, an esthetic dentist and owner of Emirzian, Mariano & Associates in East Longmeadow. “In today’s society, an attractive smile is generally understood to build confidence, and this relates to career and personal advancement.”

The question for dentists who focus on cosmetic improvements — as well as plastic surgeons and anyone who practices the medicine of looking better — is how much people are willing to pay for that personal and career boost when so many people in today’s economy are struggling just to keep their jobs and make ends meet.

Sculptors have for centuries used wood and stone to carve the human body, but Doctor Anthony Berlet prefers the real thing.

Berlet is curator of an exhibition in New York that aims to spark a debate over the idea that plastic surgery is art.

While an ordinary face-lift is routine, nose reconstruction, or rhinoplasty, is entirely different, according to Berlet.

“To understand it structurally and to be able to alter it to the point where you can say this is what I want to create for you, this is how I’m going to create it, I think that takes artistic skill, a good eye and a certain amount of creativity,” Berlet says.

The exhibition, titled “I Am Art: An Expression of the Visual and Artistic Process of Plastic Surgery,” features gruesome video footage and stills of operations, deformities and the results of accidents.

They are meant to show that beauty, like the artistic process, is not easily achieved.

“I wanted to show so much,” Berlet says of a nose operation.

“It’s a whole sculpting of the tip… It’s not just a simple cut cut trim. There’s a whole creative process to it.”

The pictures require a strong stomach of visitors to the exhibit, but that does not mean they are not, in their own way, beautiful.

“The process of getting from here to here is as beautiful as the final product,” said Berlet, who also has training as an architect.

The video of the nose job lasts six horrific minutes in which a nose is turned inside out while latex-gloved hands saw and cut and remodel the cartilage.

DAMASCUS – Reema Darweesh had second thoughts before undergoing rhinoplasty, cosmetic surgery on her nose, late last year.

“My mother pressured me to go under the knife, but I feared the pain I would suffer,” said Darweesh, 19.

“She finally convinced me after she said the procedure would bring a suitor to my door. All my friends already married and I was worried about finding a partner.”

Darweesh, who lives with her parents in Damascus, said her apprehension vanished when she saw the results of the surgery.

“All of my pre-surgery anxiety disappeared when I saw my new nose,” she said. “And my mother’s prediction did come true. I became engaged shortly afterwards.”

The cosmetic surgery market in Syria has steadily expanded over the past couple of years. Procedures like rhinoplasty, liposuction and collagen implants are no longer the preserve of the wealthy few, as demand for them increases among middle-class professionals.

“Plastic surgery fever has become an international phenomenon, especially in this era of celebrity when we see movie stars getting new looks to appear younger and project self-confidence,” said Damascus-based sociologist Muhammed Juma.

Asmaa Mazin, a 22-year-old communications major at Damascus University, said she had a nose job to look more like the celebrities she and her friends watch on TV.

“Honestly, before going under the knife, my nose had no obvious flaws,” she said. “But so many other girls do it and they come out looking like our favourite stars. I thought, ‘why not do it?’”

Does your dog have droopy eyelids? Or excessive folds of skin? Does your dog have a nice, white smile?

If not, then perhaps you should take a look at pet plastic surgery!

It’s all the rage in Brazil! In keeping up with Brazil’s affinity for plastic surgery, Edgado Brito, a Doberman breeder and Veterinarian with over 20 years of experience, adapts human plastic surgery techniques for use on pets.

Brito has performed a few thousand plastic surgeries and keeps abreast of trends in human plastic surgery to develop his own plastic surgery treatments for his animal patients. Although the animal’s health is Brito main concern, he also acknowledges that an animal’s beauty is just as important to their well-being. He believes that if a dog owner thinks that his dog is attractive, then their relationship will be a better one.

Brito’s surgeries cost anywhere from $100 to $200 each. He uses such techniques as Metacril to straighten bent ears and Botox to fix inverted eyelashes. Brito has even tightened the mammillae of female dogs, whose owners wanted to show them after they had given birth.

“Good symmetry is very important,” Brito said. “All that is not symmetric we don’t like.”

Even though there has been considerable objection from animal rights activists and pet breeders, pet plastic surgery is increasingly in demand in Brazil, the United States and Europe.

Many women feel uncomfortable with padding around the hips and small breasts. Until recently correction required two operations: One for liposuction, the other for breast enlargement with silicon and scalpel. Today breast augmentation with stem-cell-enriched own fat combines both procedures: The fat harvested in liposuction is enriched with body-own stem cells and used for natural breast augmentation.

Today, thanks to novel medical technology, stem cells from fat may be used for rejuvenation and body shaping. “Stem cells harvested from own fat are suitable for natural breast augmentation and have enormous regenerative potential,” says DDr. Karl-Georg Heinrich, Vienna-based expert in cosmetic surgery and anti-aging.

In a first step body fat will be harvested by liposuction using dedicated microcannulas. Stem cells will be extracted from one portion and mixed with the rest of the fat. Then the stem-cell-enriched fat will be injected into the breast: No scalpel is needed, no foreign substances will be implanted and no scars will remain. The stem cells will grow into new, living tissue.

The breast enlarged by that technique will look and feel perfectly natural, the increase in volume being caused by body-own tissue. Liposuction with microcannulas and breast augmentation take a few hours only. Local anaesthesia or twilight sleep will be sufficient and there will be only minimal need for aftercare. The patient may be released home right after surgery. Safety and stability of the results have been proven in studies in the USA and Japan.

At Clinic DDr. Heinrich stem-cell-enriched own fat is also used for shaping of other body regions as well as for correction of dents or skin rejuvenation.
